Give the app and handbook different jobs
A practice score tells you how you performed on that practice set. It does not establish that every explanation is current or that the set covers everything you need. California DMV directs learners to review its handbook when preparing for the knowledge test. Start from the official DMV preparation page, which also links appropriate test resources.
Use the app for repeatable retrieval practice and explanations; use the official handbook to verify the rule and the context. Confirm California and the correct license type before comparing sources. A motorcycle or commercial rule, an old screenshot or another state’s quiz can answer a different question correctly while being wrong for your present task.
CalAce’s handbook topic cards are app summaries, not a verified complete copy of the current official handbook. A link to a government source is useful only if you open it and check the relevant section. Do not infer live synchronization, official endorsement or access to private exam questions.
Work through one fictional conflict without memorizing it
Imagine an unnamed practice note says, “Pedestrians have right-of-way only where white crossing lines are painted.” This is an original hypothetical claim, not a quotation from CalAce and not a real exam item. The purpose is to demonstrate a source-checking route.
| Check | Evidence to record | Result for this example |
|---|---|---|
| State and scope | California; pedestrian crosswalk rule | Correct jurisdiction selected |
| Official location | Handbook Section 7, Crosswalks | Open the current section, not a search snippet |
| Claim comparison | Official section includes marked and unmarked crosswalks | The word “only” in the fictional note is contradicted |
| Study action | Write the corrected distinction and source/date | Do not keep rehearsing the unsupported restriction |
| If wording still differs | Preserve exact scenario and ask DMV for clarification | Unresolved; no invented answer |
The current Section 7 states that pedestrians have right-of-way in marked or unmarked crosswalks. The worked correction is therefore about the missing “unmarked” scope, not a claim that painted lines never matter. Read the surrounding pedestrian guidance rather than turning one sentence into instructions for every road situation. This is study guidance, not individualized legal advice or a substitute for safe driving instruction.
Record the date you actually checked the source and a section title or link that you can find again. A page number from a different PDF edition may not match the web version. If a screenshot is your only evidence, label its edition or capture date unknown instead of silently treating it as current.
A verification loop that ends with a reason
After resolving the comparison, explain the rule in your own words without looking. Then try a new practice scenario with the same distinction. Repeating the same answer letter can hide that you have memorized the screen rather than understood the condition. Use the missed-question log for later review; this article’s artifact is specifically a source-conflict check.
If two sources appear to disagree, first compare the subject, exceptions, state, license class, language and publication date. Do not average two rules or decide that the explanation with more confident wording wins. If the official page does not resolve the specific question, keep an unresolved entry and use DMV’s official assistance route.
A good outcome for one session may simply be one corrected misunderstanding and one accurately labeled open question. Do not turn that into a predicted test pass, verified readiness percentage or claim that an entire app bank has been audited. The example checks one scope error only.
Use CalAce’s listed practice features with a source check
CalAce’s current listing describes English/Spanish practice, instant explanations, mock tests, saved questions, mistake review and handbook topic cards. It states that Premium unlocks the full bank, mock tests, mistake review, handbook cards, offline study and bilingual explanations. Check the current offer; this guide does not promise unlimited free access.
CalAce is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by California DMV. The guide’s fictional bad note is not evidence that CalAce currently contains that error. Nor does the example prove all of its other answers are correct. Preserve the difference between a teaching scenario and an actual product finding.
For a related focused study task, use the California right-of-way guide with the current official source beside it. Keep your notes free of private test content and use the official preparation rules for the actual exam.

Use the CSV in Numbers, Excel or a spreadsheet editor. The conflicting claim is fictional and is not taken from CalAce or a private exam. Replace them with your own observations. The CSV is separate from the app and no email is required.
Questions answered
Can I replace the official handbook with app topic cards?
Topic cards are summaries. Read the current official material for the required scope and use practice to identify what needs another look.
Is the incorrect sentence in this guide a CalAce defect?
No. It is an explicitly fictional claim created to demonstrate the verification method, not a finding from the app or an exam.
What if I cannot resolve the conflict?
Keep it marked unresolved, preserve the exact scope and sources, and seek clarification from the official DMV route rather than choosing by confidence.
