Correct a scanned restaurant receipt before splitting it

By Smart Automation SRL7 min read

Compare each extracted line with the original receipt before assigning people. Check whether the printed price is per unit or the full line amount, correct quantities and decimals, then reconcile the item subtotal and final total. A total that happens to match does not prove every line is correct.

We publish BillLens. This guide provides a usable method without the app. Product features and limits were checked against the current US App Store listing on October 21, 2026. Examples are illustrative.

Keep the source receipt visible while reviewing fields

Read the merchant’s printed line structure rather than guessing from the extracted column names. A line reading “2 drinks 12.00” may show a combined line total. Confirm from the receipt or merchant before treating 12.00 as a unit price. If the original is unreadable, keep the field unresolved rather than converting it to zero.

BillLens’s current listing explicitly supports editable quantities and prices after scanning. This is a reason to review the extraction, not a claim of a measured error rate or guaranteed recognition accuracy. The worked example below is fictional and supplies its own clearly defined printed amounts.

Use a legible original photo and, if necessary, take a clearer image without glare or cropped totals. Confirm you are reviewing the final restaurant bill, not a preliminary order slip or only a card authorization. Do not include card numbers or other private details in a shared correction sheet.

Worked correction: unit price, missing decimal and duplicate item

Our fictional printed bill shows two drinks with a combined line amount of USD 12.00, one pasta USD 18.00 and one dessert USD 8.00. Item subtotal is USD 38.00. Printed tax is USD 3.04 and an already included tip is USD 6.00, giving USD 47.04. These are supplied example amounts, not a jurisdiction’s tax or tipping rule.

The initial error subtotal is USD 24 + 180 + 8 + 8 = USD 220. Correct the specific source fields rather than entering a large balancing discount. A balancing adjustment could make a number look right while leaving the wrong diner responsible for the wrong item.

The tip is already included in USD 47.04. Do not add it again as though it were missing. If a service charge and an optional tip both appear, keep their labels and verify how the actual bill is structured. Do not relabel one as the other automatically.

Reconcile lines before dividing them

Sum quantity times unit price once for each genuine item. Compare that item subtotal with the printed subtotal. Then account for verified tax, discounts, charges and tip once, using the receipt’s actual structure. If BillLens’s fields cannot represent a particular charge clearly, retain a separate explanation and check the final result manually.

Look for errors that cancel: one line may be USD 2 too high and another USD 2 too low, leaving the total unchanged while shifting who owes what. Check names, quantities and prices individually before trusting the matching final number.

Only after correction should you assign each item to its diners and review shared-item allocation. Use the linked shared-bill guide for rounding and per-person reconciliation. The calculated amount owed is not proof of a completed restaurant payment or reimbursement.

BillLens provides editable extraction with plan limits

BillLens’s listing includes receipt-photo scanning, editable items, quantities, prices, tax, discount and tip, item assignment, shared-item splitting and saved history. One receipt scan is included. Weekly Pro lists 10 scans per week and Yearly Pro 200 scans per year. Check current purchase terms.

We publish BillLens. Inspect and correct recognized fields before using totals. BillLens calculates each item subtotal as quantity multiplied by unit price; entering a printed two-item line total as the unit price doubles it. This arithmetic check is separate from testing recognition quality on real receipts.

The CSV is an independent correction log with example values and a blank row, not an import format or accuracy certificate. Review the app’s current privacy and permission details before sending a receipt image for processing; the paper method here requires no upload.

If the method fits your task, explore BillLens’s listed features on an iPhone. Check current features and plans before downloading.

Use the CSV in Numbers, Excel or a spreadsheet editor. Four fictional audit rows and a blank row. USD values are original examples; the duplicate row is removed, not a second charge. Replace them with your own observations. The CSV is separate from the app and no email is required.

Questions answered

What if the receipt shows a line total for two items?

Confirm the structure and derive the correct unit price before entering quantity times unit price.

Does a matching final total prove the extraction is right?

No. Opposing line errors can cancel and still distort diner shares.

Should I add the printed tip again?

Not if it is already included in the verified final bill.
