Build a bedtime picture routine with visible ending steps

By Smart Automation SRL6 min read

Choose a short sequence the person recognizes, put the final observable action on the board, and add a visible finished cue. For bedtime, “get into bed” is an action you can show; “fall asleep now” is not a task a picture board can guarantee. Change the displayed plan when the evening changes instead of quietly skipping a card.

We publish PictoCue. This guide provides a usable method without the app. Product features and limits were checked against the current US App Store listing on October 12, 2026. Examples are illustrative.

Define the ending before choosing pictures

Pick the actual routine you want to communicate, not an idealized evening with every possible task. Ask the person and caregiver which steps are useful and what pictures they recognize. A photograph of the real book or toothbrush may communicate more clearly than a decorative moon. Keep each label short and pair it with a meaningful picture.

Head Start describes picture-based supports for understanding activities and the parts of multi-step routines across home and education settings. That supports showing an ordered sequence; it does not prove this board or PictoCue improves sleep, prevents distress or treats a condition. Adjust the communication method to the individual rather than requiring everyone to understand the same symbol.

Write the endpoint as something observable: “get into bed,” followed by a separate “routine finished” cue. If the person needs adult help at a step, show or say that help rather than implying independence. A finished routine does not mean the person must be asleep or cannot communicate a need.

Worked flow: one choice inside a clear ending

Alex’s caregiver uses four action cards and a finished marker. Alex chooses between two familiar books before the story step, while the board keeps the ending visible. These are fictional communication examples, not a prescribed routine.

Routine finishedA distinct finished marker with wordsEnd the board; not a promise of sleep

If the chosen book is unavailable, show the replacement before reading; keep a truthful choice between options that actually exist. Do not leave a book picture visible while doing a different activity. If the family chooses a shorter evening, edit the displayed sequence first and explain what changed.

Open the free editable, printable bedtime cards. These original simple icons are placeholders to review, not personalized app output. This helper edits labels and notes only; its icons are fixed. Print or save a PDF while your edits are visible. To replace pictures, create the board in PictoCue or another editor. Browser edits are not saved automatically, and reopening this page restores the original labels.

Make “changed” different from “finished”

A finished card says an action happened. A changed card says the plan is different. Keep those meanings separate: do not mark teeth brushing complete if the action did not take place. Use a visible replacement, remove the omitted action from the current plan, and communicate the new next step.

When a person asks for help or seems confused, pause the board and check the label and picture together. “Which part does this show?” is a useful caregiver question. If they cannot identify the image, change the cue instead of treating non-use as defiance. A one-step view can reduce how much information is displayed, but its usefulness must be checked with the person.

Record one concrete observation: “pointed to book,” “asked what the bed picture meant,” or “needed help moving the finished marker.” Avoid scoring compliance or promising a quieter night. The worksheet separates the planned action, actual action and communication change so the next version can be improved without inventing an outcome.

Create and review the board in PictoCue

PictoCue’s current listing includes editable words, pictures and order, photo cards, first/then boards, routines, choices, one-step mode, optional on-device voice labels and PDF/print/share tools. Manual board building is available without AI. Check current free limits and Premium export terms in the app; the public description does not exhaustively list the limits.

Optional sentence-to-board drafting requires confirmation before sending the sentence, language, picture style and generated labels through a gateway to third-party AI services. The listing says photos, existing boards and profile names are not sent in that flow. Inspect every generated step and picture, including the ending, before saving. The free printable cards here are a separate website resource, not a PictoCue screenshot or an automatically imported board.

If the method fits your task, explore PictoCue’s listed features on an iPhone. Check current features and plans before downloading.

Use the CSV in Numbers, Excel or a spreadsheet editor. Five fictional board rows plus a blank row; a separate editable card page is also available. Replace them with your own observations. The CSV is separate from the app and no email is required.

Questions answered

Should the final card say “sleep”?

Use an observable action such as getting into bed, followed by a routine-finished cue. The board cannot guarantee sleep.

What if tonight’s steps change?

Show the revised plan before the changed step; do not use a completed marker for an action that never happened.

Do I need AI to make the board?

No. PictoCue lists a complete manual builder. Optional AI produces a draft that needs review and consent.
