Build a useful three-photo starting set
Take front, side and back photos in even light with your hair worn as it normally is. If you have curls, waves, extensions or heat styling, tell the stylist what is natural and what is styled. Add one inspiration image for the overall shape and another for a specific detail such as fringe length or color placement. Label what you like in each image so the stylist does not have to guess.
Keep the original beside any edited or AI preview. A generated result may smooth texture, increase volume or ignore growth patterns. The point is to make a conversation easier, not to promise that your hair will behave like a rendered image.
Ask questions that change the plan
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What can my current length and texture support? | Clarifies the achievable shape now. |
| How will this look without daily styling? | Matches the result to your routine. |
| What maintenance or grow-out should I expect? | Reveals the follow-up commitment. |
| What color history affects this result? | Past dye can change the process. |
| What should I avoid if I have sensitivity? | Prompts a safety discussion before chemicals. |
Write down a budget range and the time you are willing to spend on styling. A cut you can maintain can be a better decision than a preview you love but cannot reproduce.
SilkStyler lets you upload a selfie and preview a proposed hair color or style on your face. Choose whether color, length, bangs or volume is your main concern; use the corresponding preview as a question for your stylist, not a technical instruction.

If the plan includes dye, follow product and salon safety directions. The FDA hair-dye guidance advises a patch test before dyeing and following warning labels. A virtual preview cannot detect allergy, hair damage or the result of color correction. Bring your color history and any past reaction to the professional.
Agree on a fallback: a smaller trim, a temporary style change, or a staged color plan if the target cannot be achieved safely in one appointment. This is especially useful when the photo is a dramatic change from your starting point.
Use SilkStyler as a visual question
SilkStyler’s current App Store listing describes selfie-based hair try-ons. Choose one concern—shorter hair, color, bangs or volume—and save a preview with the original. At the consultation, show both and ask, “What part of this is realistic with my hair, and what would you change?” That question turns the picture into a practical plan.

Questions answered
How many inspiration photos should I bring?
One or two focused references plus current-hair photos are usually clearer than a large mixed gallery.
Can an AI preview predict the final cut?
No. It shows a possible visual direction and may idealize texture, volume or color.
Should I patch test before dye?
Follow product and salon instructions. The FDA advises patch testing and attention to warnings; discuss any past reaction with a professional.
