A photo, an extracted draft and an expense record are different
A readable image preserves source evidence. An OCR or AI tool may suggest text from it; that suggestion can be wrong. Your saved expense record should identify what you verified and what remains uncertain. Keep all three roles distinct instead of treating a successful upload as validation.
Retake a photo safely if glare, blur, a folded edge or missing bottom section hides a field. Keep the full receipt available and inspect relevant details at a readable size. Do not remove information from the only original just to make an extraction tool accept it. Avoid sharing unrelated private information visible in the background.
Before saving a new expense, check whether the same transaction is already recorded. A second photo, a payment slip and the itemized receipt can all relate to one purchase. They do not necessarily represent three different expenses.
Worked audit: a plausible-looking total is still unverified
These fictional observations show why missing fields require different actions. The “extracted draft” column could come from another tool; it is not a claim that ReceiptCue performs OCR.
| Field | Source image | Extracted draft | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Merchant | Trading name readable | Similar but different name | Correct from source |
| Date | 03/04/26; format uncertain | March 4, 2026 | Unresolved; verify date convention |
| Currency | Symbol unclear | USD | Unresolved; do not infer from locale |
| Total | Bottom edge cropped | 0.00 | Unresolved; obtain complete receipt |
| Tax | Tax line unreadable | 0.00 | Unknown, not verified zero |
A field is verified only to the extent the source supports it. The word Total beside a cropped amount does not supply the amount. For an ambiguous date, ask the merchant or check reliable transaction context; do not silently swap day and month. Keep the original date text in your audit until resolved.
If the total is readable but item arithmetic differs, check quantities, discounts, tax-included prices, service charges and tips. A line total may already include quantity. Do not add an included tax twice. When the mismatch remains unexplained, preserve it and seek clarification instead of forcing the record to balance.
A payment slip is not the entire business-purpose record
The IRS explains that adequate records or sufficient evidence support claimed business expenses. Keep that evidence question separate from whether a field was read correctly. Receipt and payment facts still need the relevant supporting context. This is US recordkeeping guidance, not a determination that an expense is deductible.
Keep the merchant document, transaction reference and your factual business-purpose note as separate evidence. Do not mark a cost deductible merely because a photo is attached or an app category sounds business-related. Employer reimbursement rules and tax rules can ask different questions.
If you later obtain a corrected receipt, link it to the original record and note what was resolved. Keep an unresolved amount/date outside completed totals until the required information is established through your actual workflow. This article does not prescribe statutory retention periods or replace an accountant.
Save reviewed information in ReceiptCue within its actual scope
ReceiptCue’s current listing supports expense entry with merchant, amount, category, date, notes and receipt photo, plus reimbursable marking, mileage, missing-proof warnings and monthly summaries. Pro adds unlimited expenses/photos, mileage logs, CSV/PDF export and category reporting. Check actual plan terms before relying on those workflows.
The public listing does not advertise automatic receipt OCR or AI extraction. Use its reviewed fields and photo attachment rather than expecting a scan to fill them automatically. If a required field is unknown, keep a pending note outside a completed entry rather than inventing an amount or a date just to save a form.
The listing says financial/receipt data stays on-device unless exported/shared, with no account or bank connection required. Read the current privacy details and protect exported files. Once a restaurant receipt is verified, the linked shared-bill guide can allocate it; for mileage claims, use a separate trip log instead of treating a fuel receipt as proof of business distance.

Use the CSV in Numbers, Excel or a spreadsheet editor. Five fictional field checks plus a blank row. No OCR feature, verified missing amount, deduction eligibility or automatic spreadsheet formulas. Replace them with your own observations. The CSV is separate from the app and no email is required.
Questions answered
Does a missing extracted tax value mean no tax was charged?
No. Compare the actual receipt. Unreadable or omitted data is unknown, not verified zero.
Does ReceiptCue automatically read the scan?
The current public listing describes manual expense fields and receipt-photo attachment, not automatic OCR. Review actual installed features.
Is a receipt photo enough to prove a tax deduction?
Not automatically. Applicable rules and business-purpose evidence matter; this worksheet does not decide deductibility.
