Describe your individual contribution to a team project

By Smart Automation SRL7 min read

State the team project as context, then name the specific work you personally performed and the evidence that supports it. Attribute shared outcomes to the team, and leave unsupported ownership or metrics out. A precise contribution can be useful without claiming that you led everything or caused the whole result.

We publish JobCue. This guide provides a usable method without the app. Product features and limits were checked against the current US App Store listing on October 25, 2026. Examples are illustrative.

Build an attribution record before polishing the sentence

Start with a completed project whose details you can discuss without exposing confidential material. List the team’s objective, your role, your deliverables, who else owned adjacent work and which version of an artifact supports your contribution. A project name alone does not establish what you did.

CareerOneStop recommends specific work descriptions that explain context and outcomes relevant to the target role. It encourages numbers when supported; it does not make invented percentages necessary. This guide adds an original ownership audit so a shared result is not accidentally presented as an individual achievement.

Separate three claims: performed, contributed to and led. Writing a test script is different from designing the whole test program. Reviewing a draft is different from authoring it. Coordinating a meeting is different from owning the final delivery. Choose a verb you could explain with a concrete example and an honest boundary.

Worked attribution: one release, three artifact references

Fictional project: a five-person team released a new stock-ordering workflow. Morgan worked on validation and support material. The project record includes test checklist v3 authored by Morgan, a shared issue log whose dated entries identify Morgan’s logging and completed retests, and training guide v2 whose screenshots Morgan updated. A colleague owned implementation, and another person led rollout.

A defensible draft is: “Created the validation checklist, logged and retested assigned issues, and updated training screenshots for a five-person team’s stock-ordering workflow release.” It identifies Morgan’s work and the shared context without assigning the whole release to Morgan. The five-person detail is fictional but supported within this example; omit a team size in your own bullet if you cannot verify it.

If a reliable team metric exists, label it as a team result and explain your contribution alongside it. Do not divide a shared revenue or efficiency figure by the number of teammates to invent a personal impact. In this example no outcome metric is available, so none is added. A completed artifact supplies specificity without a fabricated percentage.

Test the claim against ownership, confidentiality and interview questions

Ask: “Which part did I personally create, change, test or coordinate?” Then ask what the artifact does not prove. A document’s edit history can support an edit, but not automatically adoption, customer impact or leadership of the whole program. A ticket assignment does not prove that the work was finished.

Keep evidence references private. A resume normally needs a concise description, not internal ticket URLs, customer records or proprietary screenshots. Use an approved public portfolio version only when you have permission. If you can discuss the work but cannot disclose the client, use an accurate non-identifying context.

Read the bullet as an interviewer: could you explain the starting problem, your decision, the part another person owned and how your deliverable was checked? If a strong verb exaggerates that story, change the verb before adding keywords. The linked job-description matrix handles relevance; this audit handles attribution within one collaboration.

JobCue drafts wording; you remain responsible for the claim

JobCue’s current listing describes setup for a target role, job-description comparison, resume-section drafting/editing, cover-letter drafts, templates and drafts for different applications. Up to three sections can be built and edited free. Pro unlocks unlimited sections and polished export; check the current terms.

We publish JobCue. Its listing explicitly says AI is drafting support and does not guarantee interviews, offers, recruiter replies or ATS acceptance. An impressive generated verb or number is not evidence that you performed the work. Review every suggestion against your attribution record.

Use the CSV independently to compare a candidate claim with a private evidence reference and a verified final phrase. It does not import into JobCue or certify employment history. Share only appropriate material with any optional drafting service; do not paste confidential evidence merely to make a sentence sound more convincing.

Use the CSV in Numbers, Excel or a spreadsheet editor. Three fictional attribution checks and a blank row. No real employment, metric, hiring outcome or permission is asserted. Replace them with your own observations. The CSV is separate from the app and no email is required.

Questions answered

Can a team outcome appear in my bullet?

Yes, when it is supported, clearly attributed to the team and paired with your actual contribution.

Do I need a number in every bullet?

No. A specific verified deliverable can be clearer than an invented metric.

Does editing a document prove I led the project?

No. State the part you actually owned and checked.
