RV maintenance checklist and service log: organize the next trip

By Smart Automation SRL4 min read

Keep three separate records: a pre-trip checklist, maintenance tasks based on your own RV and component manuals, and a service history showing what was actually done. Assign each task a due date, mileage or other manufacturer-specified interval. Record “needs attention” honestly; a completed checklist is not a certification that the RV is safe to drive.

We publish RVCue. This guide includes our app alongside a method you can use without it. Product details were checked against the US App Store listing on October 5, 2026; examples are illustrative.

Start with your rig’s documentation

A travel trailer, motorhome and camper van do not share every maintenance requirement. Collect the RV manual and relevant chassis, axle, tire, generator and appliance documents for your exact model. Note the manufacturer, model and document revision so a generic online checklist does not quietly override the correct interval.

Jayco publishes model-specific owner manuals and a general maintenance checklist. Those resources are useful examples of why the manufacturer’s instructions come first; a Jayco interval should not be copied onto a different rig simply because both are RVs. Use a qualified professional for work outside your knowledge or the manual’s owner scope.

Separate checks from service work

Planning prompts to customize against your manuals
RecordWhat it answersExamples to confirm in your manual
Pre-trip inspectionWhat needs attention before departure?Tires, lights, hitch or towing connections, secured equipment
Due maintenanceWhat scheduled work is approaching?Component inspection, fluids or service at model-specific intervals
Service historyWhat was done and what proves it?Date, mileage, provider, work, receipt and next due point

Do not write “tires checked” when you only looked at one tire. Define the check precisely using the correct documentation and equipment. If something is unclear, record the uncertainty and get it resolved. An inspection result should distinguish clear observations from items needing attention.

A pre-trip observation sheet to adapt

Use these prompts only with the applicable manual’s procedure. Mark each row Clear, Needs Attention or Not Applicable, add the observation, and resolve unclear or safety-critical items before treating the plan as complete.

A service-log row that stays useful

Illustrative record structure; not a service recommendation
FieldWhat to enter
Date / mileageActual service date and odometer if applicable
System / componentThe specific item serviced
ProviderWho performed the work
Work performedWhat changed, including relevant part details
Cost / proofAmount, receipt or service document
Next dueDate or interval taken from the applicable manual

A receipt that says “repair” may not explain which component was replaced. Add a plain-language description while the work is fresh and attach the original paperwork. When a provider recommends follow-up work, separate that recommendation from work already completed.

Describe a concern without pretending to diagnose it

For a technician, write the observation, when it happens and what you already checked. “Interior light flickers on shore power” is more useful than “converter broken” when you have not established the cause. Add photographs only when taking them is safe. Do not continue operation or inspection merely to fill a form when there is a critical safety concern.

RVCue’s current listing organizes owner observations into on-device service briefs and explicitly does not diagnose faults or guarantee safe operation. Its Clear and Needs Attention records are owner observations. Critical concerns need the appropriate professional or emergency response, not an optimistic checklist label.

Keep one maintenance review separate from trip packing

Before a trip, review unresolved observations and upcoming due tasks in time to arrange help. After service, add proof and update the next due point. Before storage or seasonal use, consult the instructions for your rig and its installed components instead of applying a universal winterization recipe.

RVCue supports rig-specific starter planning, offline inspections, service records and stored attachments. Its maintenance and basic record workflows are available without a subscription; assisted brief quotas and plan terms appear in the listing and app. Keep recoverable copies of important service documents. The home inventory backup guide explains the difference between local storage and a separate backup. If you record eligible work travel separately, use the manual mileage log rather than assuming every RV journey is business travel.

Questions answered

How often should I service my RV?

Use the intervals for your exact RV, chassis and components. A general article cannot safely supply one schedule for every rig.

Does a completed pre-trip checklist mean safe to drive?

No. It records checks and observations; unresolved issues and manufacturer instructions still govern what you should do.

Can RVCue diagnose a fault?

No. Its listing explicitly describes organization and owner-reported briefs, not diagnosis or repair authorization.

Use RVCue on iOS

Organize rig-specific tasks, offline pre-trip observations, service records, attachments and on-device service briefs.

Maintenance, inspections, records and basic briefs remain available without subscription. Assisted brief use has tier limits. The app does not certify safety or replace qualified professionals.
