Summary
PlumeCue is a local-first bird identification and field-log app. It has no account, advertising, cross-app tracking, or app analytics. Most product data stays on your device. Only after you choose to continue does PlumeCue send one prepared bird photo or call and your selected country or U.S. state/DC directly to Google’s Gemini API to build an identification shortlist.
Information kept on your device
- Selected or recorded source media, temporary normalized media, and whether you chose to save source media.
- Field-note details such as date, selected country or U.S. state/DC, photo-or-call source, candidate snapshot, your confirmed or unconfirmed decision, optional notes, sample status, and catalog/provider version.
- App preferences, onboarding choice, recent region, media-transfer consent receipt, and the successful-identification usage ledger.
- The bundled field guide, regional catalog, and practice-sample records.
These items are used to prepare requests, show candidates, save your private field log, enforce the included-identification allowance, remember settings, and restore the app’s local state.
Camera, photos, microphone, and optional location
PlumeCue asks for camera, photo-library, or microphone access only after you choose the corresponding capture action. You may instead import supported media, use a labeled practice sample, or use the manual Field Guide.
If you tap Use Current Location, PlumeCue uses the coordinates on your device only to select a supported U.S. state or DC. The coordinates are immediately discarded. They are not stored in your field log and are not sent to the AI provider; only the selected state or DC may be sent.
Direct Google Gemini processing
For a requested identification, PlumeCue removes embedded media metadata, reduces the file to the supported format and size, and displays a consent prompt. If you continue, the app sends the prepared photo or 3–30 second call, the selected country or U.S. state/DC, and the technical request directly from the app to Google’s Gemini API over encrypted HTTPS. The purpose is limited to returning structured candidate identifiers and clue signals for local validation.
PlumeCue does not include your name, field log, optional note text, precise coordinates, contacts, or payment information in that AI request. Google may receive the device IP address and technical request metadata needed to provide, secure, and limit the service. PlumeCue uses no Firebase service, custom backend, app account, or Google user sign-in.
Google processes submitted media, prompts, responses, and technical service data under the Gemini API terms and Google Privacy Policy. PlumeCue does not use provider responses for advertising or app analytics and does not create a separate server-side copy.
Retention and deletion
- Local data: field notes and preferences remain until you delete them or remove the app. Individual note deletion removes its saved local media. Delete All Local Data removes PlumeCue’s local field notes, media, preferences, onboarding state, consent receipts, and usage ledger.
- Temporary media: when Save Source Media is off, PlumeCue deletes protected temporary media after a result, cancellation, or failure. When it is on, the source stays locally until the related note or all local data is deleted.
- AI processing: PlumeCue does not keep a custom server copy. Google may retain limited logs or backups as described in its terms and as required for security or law. Local deletion cannot erase copies already processed by Google; contact us for a provider-related privacy request.
- Support: if you email or call, we receive the information you choose to provide and keep it only as long as reasonably needed to answer, maintain records, or meet legal obligations.
Deleting PlumeCue data does not cancel an Apple subscription. Revoke Media Transfer Consent removes only the local consent receipt and causes the next AI request to ask again.
Apple purchases, sharing, and exports
Apple processes subscription purchases, renewal status, and refunds through StoreKit and your Apple Account. PlumeCue receives entitlement status but not your payment-card details. Apple’s handling is governed by its own privacy terms.
Nothing is exported automatically. When you explicitly share a note or export a CSV, iOS presents the system share sheet and sends the selected content only to the destination you choose. Practice samples remain labeled as examples when included.
What PlumeCue does not use
PlumeCue has no app account or login, custom web backend, ads, third-party analytics, cross-app tracking, contacts access, notification service, social graph, or precise-location history. The current design does not include an advertising identifier or sell personal information.
Children and sensitive media
PlumeCue is a general recreational birdwatching tool and is not directed specifically to children. A parent or guardian should supervise a minor’s use. Do not submit media containing a person, a child’s image or voice, private conversation, identifying document, exact address, or other sensitive personal information. If you believe a child supplied personal information, contact us so we can evaluate and assist with deletion.
Security and international processing
PlumeCue uses iOS file protection, metadata stripping, least-data request design, an on-device six-requests-per-minute limit, and encrypted HTTPS transport. No system can guarantee absolute security. Google, Apple, and their processors may process technical or service data in countries where they operate, subject to their legal and contractual safeguards.
